Growing international concern about new strain of virus
BBC, December 22: There is growing international concern about the new strain of COVID-19 in the United Kingdom, and many other countries have planned for travel ban to UK.
So far, more than 40 countries have banned arrivals from the UK. The European Union is negotiating a common policy.
Sweden has banned travel from Denmark after a patient was found infected with the new strain virus. The strain of coronavirus is even more contagious. But no evidence of further fatalities has been found.
As the list of countries banning travel to and from the UK has grown, the World Health Organization (WHO) has called for attention to be given to the risks involved.
Dr.Mike Ryan, the WHO’s head of emergency affairs, said the new strain of the virus was a normal part of the epidemic and was “out of control”. His statement contradicts the statement of the British Health Minister.
Most parts of the continent have banned arrivals from the UK to control the new strain virus.
The French government has imposed a ban on passengers and cargo from the UK, affecting services at the British port of Dover.
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said he has been talking with French President Emmanuel Macron about resuming trade services and have confidence the issues will be resolved soon.
Officials in Brussels are discussing how to move forward with the 27 EU member states. Many other countries, including India, Iran, and Canada, have banned arrivals from the UK.
The United States is yet to decide. But British Airways and Delta have made it mandatory for passengers to show a negative test report to board flights from John F. Kennedy Airport in New York.
Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Oman have closed their borders to international travelers. The new strain of COVID-19 has been found in Denmark as well as in Australia, Italy, and the Netherlands.
