Kathmandu. China has announced a new restriction on American diplomats stationed in China and Hong Kong. China claimed the move to be a response to the restrictions imposed on Chinese diplomats working in the United States last year.

US diplomats had already been barred from travelling to any part of China or to college premises. Beijing has appealed to the US to lift the restrictions from its embassy and its employees on American soil. According to the online statement expressed by a spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry on Friday, the regulation is applicable to all working for the American Embassy in Beijing and Consulates across the Chinese territory.

“China has supported exchanges and cooperation between the two countries in all aspects,” the spokesperson said. He mentions that the ban could be lifted if the US reverses the steps it took in October last year. Securing his anonymity, the spokesperson added, “We once again appeal to the US to undo its mistakes and lift the restrictions on the Chinese Embassy and its staff. If it were to do so, Chinese response is expected to be optimistic”.
