Kathmandu. Former president of the Indian Congress Party, Rahul Gandhi and the general secretary Priyanka Gandhi were arrested by the UP police on Thursday. They were en route to Hathras in order to visit the family of the Hathras gang rape victim.

The police detained them on the Yamuna expressway in Greater Noida. They attempted to move forward on foot after their car was stopped by the police. A dispute took place between the party workers and the police leading to Rahul Gandhi being pushed towards the ground. When Rahul Gandhi asked for a reason for the arrest, the police stated that according to the 1897 Epidemic Diseases Act, section 3, they were allowed to arrest people who disobeyed the strict instructions provided during a pandemic, under the Indian Penal Code (IPC), section 188.

They were later released by the UP police and were sent back to Delhi.
