Kathmandu. Prime Minister Modi inaugurated a 9.02 km long tunnel named ‘Atal tunnel’, constructed at Rohtang in Himachal Pradesh. It is the world’s longest tunnel with an altitude of 3,000 meters above the sea level.

The tunnel connects Manali to Lahaul-Spiti valley. The tunnel is made with ultra-modern specification within the Pir-Panjal Himalayan range. It will be beneficial from the perspective of the military, as it will provide better connectivity within the Ladakh region. The tunnel will be accessible throughout the year, unlikely the Rohtang Pass, which used to be closed from November to April due to snow.

The Union Cabinet of India in 2019 decided to name it ‘Atal Tunnel’ to pay respect to the late leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Sonia Gandhi laid the foundation stone for the tunnel in 2010.
