Nepal under high risk of cyber-attacks from North Korea
Kathmandu. Nepal seems to be the new target location of cyber attacks from North Korea. Dr. Monika Chansoria, a senior fellow at the Japan Institute of International Affairs in Tokyo, stated that Nepal is at high cyber risk because North Korean hackers are active in Nepal with the help of China. She also claims that the hackers have spread their network in Nepal and have started illegal activities already.
The Nepal Police cracked down a network of large number of Chinese people hacking Nepalese ATMs in December 2019. Some North Korean nationals were also caught working illegally in Nepal in November 2019.
The Lazarus Group and United Front Works Department have been conducting various hacking activities in countries around the world, including Nepal. In April 2020, United States State Department, The Department of Homeland Security along with other departments, accused North Korea of conducting activities of money laundering, theft and transactions through illegal companies.
The report claimed that North Korea has collected US$ 2 billion through cyber-attacks.
