Indian Army Chief’s visit to Nepal: Border dispute to be discussed
Kathmandu. According to the reports of the Indian media, the Indian Army Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane, on his upcoming visit to Nepal, will discuss the issue regarding the border dispute between India and Nepal.
The recent India-Nepal border row erupted in May after India’s Defense Minister inaugurated a road in the Kalapani area that Nepal claims as a part of its territory.
In an interview with DC Nepal’s English portal, Dr Nihar R. Nayak, Research Fellow with Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses, claimed that while the government of Nepal has been raising concerns surrounding the open border from time to time, however, the Indian government has not responded. Therefore, some communication gap is there which needs to be sorted out.
General Naravane’s visit that was previously postponed due to the lockdown, is likely to be held from 4 to 6 November. During the visit, he will hold talks with Nepal’s Chief of Army Staff Purnachandra Thapa, Nepal’s top political leaders and others with an agenda of strengthening the overall relationship in the field of defense and security.
The Print reported that the General is also visiting Nepal to continue an old tradition that started in 1950. According to the tradition, Nepali President Bidhya Devi Bhandari will honour Naravane with the insignia of the honorary rank of the General of the Nepal Army at Shital Niwas.
Last week, the Chief of the Indian Intelligence Agency, Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) also visited Nepal for a talk with Prime Minister K.P Sharma Oli.
