Bahrain’s Prime Minister Khalifa bin Salman dies in the US
Kathmandu. Bahrain’s incumbent Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa has died on Wednesday, aged 84.
Al Jazeera has quoted Bahrain News Agency as saying that he died at the Mayo Clinic in the United States of America. The news agency has not elaborated on the news.
King Sheikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain has announced official mourning for a week during which flags will be flown at half-mast and government ministries and departments will be closed for three days starting Thursday.
The agency informed that the funeral ceremony will take place in Bahrain and will be limited to a close circle of relatives
Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa was one of the world’s longest-serving prime ministers. He had served as the Prime Minister of Bahrain since 1970, taking the office even before Bahrain’s independence on August 15, 1971.
In 2011, however, his power and authority had been challenged by the Shiite majority and others, who demonstrated against him over long-running corruption charges.
