Kathmandu, February 18. During a virtual UN briefing of COVID-19, US Secretary Antony Blinken confirmed that the United States have decided to pay $200 million to the World Health Organization.

Earlier last year, the former President Donald Trump had decided to withdraw from the WHO membership and transfer the funds to other UN bodies. Trump’s administration received backfires for blaming WHO for “mishandling the pandemic”.

Joe Biden on his first at the White House signed 17 executive orders out of which 12 were the reversals to Trump’s policies. One of the orders was “to rejoin the World Health Organization”.

Being the largest donor, US has committed to supply over 200 million dollars to the global health body by the end of February. Blinken said, “This is a key step forward in fulfilling our financial obligations as a WHO member,”

He added, “This pandemic is one of those challenges and gives us an opportunity not only to get through the current crisis but also to become more prepared and more resilient for the future.”
