Russia backs India again for permanent seat at UNSC
Kathmandu, December 12. Russia has backed India again for its permanent membership at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov backed the decision and stated India added value to the council with its stance on global issues.
Lavrov said, “I think that India is currently one of the leading countries in terms of economic growth, maybe even the leader. Its population will soon be bigger than that of any other country. New Delhi has vast diplomatic experience in settling various kinds of problems, as well as authority and a reputation in its region.”
He said India played a prime role in South Asia and SCO. Furthermore, he vouched for India and Brazil to have the permanent membership of the council.
Along with India and Brazil, Japan and Germany have been promoting their applications to the UNSC. Countries such as US, UK, France and Russia have supported a permanent seat for India in the UN body. The fifteen member council has five permanent seats.
While India is currently presiding the council, its tenure is scheduled to end in December.
