Nepal elects Congress leader Ram Chandra Paudel as new president (with photos)

Kathmandu, March 10. Ram Chandra Paudel, a key figure of the Nepali Congress, has been elected as Nepal’s new president.

In Thursday’s presidential election, Paudel received 33,802 votes and became the third president of Nepal. He defeated Subash Chandra Nembang, the vice chair of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist). Nembang received only 15,518 votes.

A total of 313 members of the Federal Parliament and 518 provincial assembly members took part in the voting process. The voting was held between 10 am to 3 pm inside the International Conference Centre, New Baneswar.

According to Nepal’s constitution, the president has a five-year term and is only eligible to run for office a maximum of two terms.
