Kathmandu, Dec 13: In a concerning trend, Nepali youths are reportedly joining the Russian army to participate in the conflict in Ukraine, attracted by promises of good earnings. A young man, who arrived in Russia two months ago, revealed that after being lured by an agent, he quickly found himself involved in the fight against Ukraine.

Expressing the critical situation, the unnamed youth stated that they are gearing up for war and are preparing to enter the field in a few days. He highlighted the uncertainty of their fate, emphasizing the large number of Nepali recruits in the Russian army, estimated to be around 3 to 4 thousand. The young man shared the grim reality of their deployment on the front line and the uncertainties they face.

While the official data from the Nepalese government acknowledges six Nepali casualties in the Russia-Ukraine war and two in the custody of the Ukrainian army, reports from those on the ground suggest a higher death toll. The youth mentioned that they are not in contact with many Nepalis, indicating that a significant number of recruits may have lost their lives.

Despite the government’s ban on Nepalis joining the Russian army and the requirement for a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Consular Service Department, human traffickers continue to send individuals to the conflict zone, taking advantage of the vulnerable situation. Recent arrests of 12 people involved in sending individuals to join the Russian army highlight the ongoing challenge.

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda” acknowledged the issue, stating that official information indicated around 200 Nepalis planning to join the Russian army. The government has urged citizens to avoid joining the army based on misinformation or temptations, emphasizing the risks and the need for official approval.
