Kathmandu, Oct 15: India has recalled its ambassador, Sanjay Kumar Verma, amid escalating diplomatic tensions with Canada. The move follows the Canadian government’s inquiry regarding the ambassador’s activities, which India has dismissed as politically motivated.

In addition to Verma, India has also recalled other senior diplomats targeted by Canada. The tension stems from allegations related to the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Sikh leader, on June 18, 2023, outside a Gurdwara in Surrey, Canada. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused the Indian government of involvement in Nijjar’s murder on September 18, 2023, a charge India has repeatedly denied.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs criticized the Canadian government, calling the allegations politically motivated and intended to serve domestic electoral agendas. It stated that despite several requests, Canada has not provided any evidence to support the accusations.

Nijjar’s killing resulted in the arrest of three suspects, all Indian nationals. India’s decision to recall its ambassador comes amid further diplomatic strain, with both nations summoning each other’s envoys as the situation unfolds.
