Former Bangladesh PM Yunus Accuses Sheikh Hasina of Ruining Governance
Kathmandu, Dec 5: Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Mohammad Yunus has accused Sheikh Hasina, the chief advisor to Bangladesh’s interim government, of destroying the country’s governance system during her 15-year tenure as Prime Minister.
In an interview with Nikkei Asia, Yunus alleged that Hasina ignored democratic principles, conducting elections without voter participation and unilaterally declaring herself and her party winners. He criticized her governance, stating, “We have a huge responsibility to rebuild Bangladesh by restoring democracy, economic stability, and public trust.”
Yunus also dismissed the possibility of elections under the current circumstances, claiming that commissions have been established to reform the constitution, judiciary, and electoral process. He said these reforms, set to begin implementation in January, aim to create a “completely new Bangladesh.”
He further announced plans to formally request India to extradite Hasina after her trial concludes, citing an international agreement between the two nations. Yunus dismissed India’s concerns over attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh as “propaganda.”
Meanwhile, Sheikh Hasina has accused Yunus of committing “genocide” in the country. Speaking at an event in New York, she criticized his leadership amid reports of violence against Hindus in Bangladesh, adding to the growing tensions between the two leaders.
