Kathmandu, Feb 24: The Trump administration has put most of the employees at the US Agency for International Development (USAID) on indefinite leave. According to media reports, about 4,200 USAID workers have been furloughed, and at least 1,600 employees have been dismissed. It is not clear how many of these employees will be reappointed in the future.

The move is part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to reduce the number of federal employees under Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency plan, which aims to cut government spending. This action followed a decision by a US federal judge who blocked the plan, stating that the ban was not permanent.

USAID is an independent agency of the United States government, established in 1961 by then-President John F. Kennedy. The agency manages civilian foreign aid and development assistance around the world, working on global health, economic development, disaster relief, and democratic reform. USAID currently operates in more than 100 countries and plays a key role in alleviating humanitarian crises while supporting US foreign policy. In 2023, the agency had a budget of $40 billion.
