Teachers’ Agitation Enters 16th Day, Disrupts Schools and Traffic in Kathmandu

Kathmandu, April 17: The teachers’ protest, led by the Federation of Nepal Teachers (FNTE), entered its 16th consecutive day on Thursday, with growing impact on community schools and daily life in Kathmandu Valley.
The ongoing movement demands the promulgation of the School Education Act, and has intensified with street sit-ins and demonstrations. On Thursday, protesting teachers staged a sit-in at Baneshwor, further adding to the traffic woes in the capital.
The prolonged agitation has affected community schools across the country, halting admissions despite the start of the new academic session.
In response, the government has taken a step forward. A cabinet meeting on Tuesday decided to recommend convening a parliamentary session on May 30 to address the teachers’ demands and pass the School Education Bill.
However, FNTE has made it clear that the protest will continue until the Act is officially passed, keeping the pressure on the government to act swiftly.
