Kathmandu, May 8: UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has stirred political circles by holding intense talks with the CPN-UML while on medical ‘bed rest,’ as advised by his doctors.

The behind-the-scenes discussions center around forming a new political coalition, which has put the current ruling alliance at risk. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, already under pressure from the Nepali Congress (NC) regarding the appointment of a new NRB Governor, has expressed appreciation for Prachanda’s flexibility—signaling possible shifts in political alliances.

The government has functioned without a central bank governor for two months, threatening economic stability amid ongoing parliamentary budget discussions. Talks between PM Oli and NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba on Monday failed to produce consensus, with Oli reportedly insisting on appointing the governor himself.

Tensions have worsened between the UML and NC, particularly over foreign relations and internal trust issues. PM Oli has allegedly blamed Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba for the breakdown in ties with India—highlighted by India’s continued refusal to invite Oli for an official visit, despite signaling readiness to welcome Deuba if he assumes the premiership.

Adding to the friction, Deuba’s participation in a pro-Shesh Ghale NRNA event has further isolated Oli. Political insiders now suggest that Prachanda may back a new alliance with UML to remove Oli, who reportedly agreed not to seek the PM post again.

UML insiders say they are interested in unity with Prachanda—not just for power-sharing, but for a long-term strategic partnership, suggesting a deeper realignment may be underway in Nepal’s political landscape.
