Kathmandu, January 15. A team of scientists have discovered a new vibrant orange-furred species of bat in west Africa. The new species is considered critically endangered.

In the research article published in the Journal American Museum Novitiates, the scientists have described that two years ago, the team was carrying out an assessment for the Nimba Iron Ore Project in the isolated Nimba Mountain range of Guinea. The abandoned mine tunnels are heavily colonized by the bats.

The researchers had a particular interest in the other species of bat Hipposideros lamottei. But, they suddenly found two bright and vibrant bats that didn’t match the existing records. In order to study the unknown creature, Bat taxonomy expert Nancy Simmons from Bat Conservation International board was called.

After a long analysis, the researchers called the new bat Myotis nimbaensis, in honour of the mountain range where it was discovered.
