Twenty seismic stations constructed after 2015 earthquake
Kathmandu, January 16. After the 2015 Great Gorkha Earthquake, 20 seismic stations have been established all over the country. Seismic stations are equipped with seismometers, instruments that respond to ground motions, such as caused by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and explosions.
The government constructed;
- 10 seismic stations with the help of the Chinese government: in Sankhuwasabha, Solukhumbu, Rasuwa, Lamjung, Mustang, Dolpa, Mugu, Bajura and Darchula districts
- Eight with the help of the Japanese government: in Sindhuli, Bara, Chitwan, Nawalparasi, Syangja, Myagdi, Kapilvastu, Rolpa districts.
- Two with the help of a Thai Company: in Mahottari and Dang districts.
Before 2015, only 22 stations operated in Nepal, but now a total of 42 stations are measuring seismic waves all over Nepal. The first seismic station was built in 2037 BS at Phulchoki Danda in Lalitpur.
After the Gorkha earthquake, 550 aftershocks (measuring more than 4 magnitudes), have occurred in Nepal. “With the construction of many earthquake measuring stations, it has become easier to measure even the smallest earthquakes,” said Mukunda Bhattarai, a seismologist at the National Earthquake Monitoring & Research Center.
