Nepalis in Florida donate 1.5 lakh for COVID-19 relief in Nepal
Kathmandu, January 22. With the purpose of supporting the relief program of COVID-19 in Nepal such as free food campaign, Nepalese Students’ Association at the University of South Florida(NeSA@USF) in collaboration with the Nepalese Association of Florida (NAF), donated an amount of NPR 1,50,917 (USD $ 1,301) to Hamro Sano Prayas.
On November 7th 2020 NAF organized a virtual Deusi Bhailo event, live-streamed on YouTube. The event showcased cultural performances by USF students and the local residents of in and around Tampa Bay. The funds were collected from the generous non-residential Nepali (NRN) communities through the gofundme and paypal online transaction facilities.
After the government of Nepal imposed lockdown due to pandemic, the national economy started shrinking. The financial status of the public also weakened. As a result, people faced difficulties in securing proper food, supplies and education.
The Deusi Bhailo event was the first of a kind and was technically challenging. The process of organizing the event was a learning platform which enhanced skills of leadership, teamwork, technical expertise, coordination to the artists of NeSA@USF team.
Moreover, NeSA@USF have actively organized fundraiser events in the past for the nonprofit organization in Nepal. NeSA’s had recently donated USD $ 792 to National Innovation Center and USD $ 832 in 2020 and USD $1200 in 2019.
Donation funds were supported by generous NRN community living in the Tampa Bay Area, Florida and affiliated to USF and beyond.
NeSA@USF is founded by Nepali Students. It promotes friendship, cultural exchange and understanding among Nepali and non-Nepali students and residents from USF and Tampa Bay area united by various social and cultural events.
