People in Ireland drink an average of 40 bottles of vodka per year
Kathmandu, April 16. The Health Research Board (HRB) of Ireland has revealed that a person over the age of 15 in Ireland drinks more than 10 litres of alcohol per year.
The government had targeted of no more than 9.1 litres of pure alcohol per person a year for the year 2020. But figures show that in 2019, on average, every person in Ireland aged 15 and over drank 10.8 litres of pure alcohol a year – the equivalent of either 40 bottles of vodka, 113 bottles of wine or 436 pints of beer.
The data has revealed that men aged 25-34 years are more likely to be classed as hazardous drinkers. It further said that they are likely to self-harm themselves with alcohol and poisoning.
Ireland ranks ninth among OECD countries in terms of alcohol consumption and eighth in the world when it comes to monthly binge drinking.
While drinking has relatively reduced during the pandemic, it is said that people have reduced from drinking at pubs or restaurants with drinking at home.
The report also reveals that alcohol-related harm leads to three deaths per day in Ireland, which has posed to be a growing burden for hospitals.
It is also said that people as young as 16 are likely to get alcohol for consumption from their parents, and rest getting from a pub, supermarket or off-license. The report revealed that 82% schoolchildren have consumed their first alcoholic drink by 17.
