6.4 magnitude earthquake jolts Assam
Kathmandu, April 28. An earthquake of magnitude 6.4 hit Assam on Wednesday morning. The earthquake was said to be felt in major parts of North-East India.
According to the seismology centre in India, the earthquake was recorded at 7:51 am and it was centred 43 km west of Tezpur in Assam. It was followed by two aftershocks, measuring 4.3 and 4.4 on the Richter scale.
The US Geological Survey has said the earthquake hit at a relatively shallow depth of 29 kilometres (18 miles).
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has tweeted -“Spoke to Assam CM Shri @sarbanandsonwal Ji regarding the earthquake in parts of the state. Assured all possible help from the Centre. I pray for the well-being of the people of Assam.”
Videos surfacing on various media have shown walls being collapsed and shattered windows. No casualties or injuries have been reported so far.
