Delhi records highest 24-hour May rain, 119.3mm

Kathmandu, May 20. In the past 24 hours, cyclonic storm Tauktae poured 119.3 mm of rain on Delhi. Weather experts have claimed that this was the rainiest day (of May) in the history of Delhi.

In the 12-hour duration ending at 8.30 p.m. on Wednesday, the Safdarjung observatory of the India Meteorological Department recorded 60mm of rainfall. Till Thursday at 8:30 am, the figure had already reached 119.3 mm. 

“After 8:30 p.m., there was, even more, wind and rain. As a result, the previous 1976 record has already been shattered.” Senior scientist at the National Weather Forecasting Center, R K Jenamani noted.

On May 24, 1976, the observatory had recorded 60 mm of rainfall in a 24-hour period. It was almost half of yesterday’s figure.
