Kathmandu, February 4. Red Cross Societies on Friday, warned the Madagascar government of a huge tropical cyclone “Batsirai” which seems to rip through the  eastern coast on Saturday.

Through an official press release on Friday, the secretary-general of Madagascar Red Cross,  Andoniaina Ratsimamangas stated that 4.4 million people living in 14 districts across the Atsinanana region are in urgent need of help.

The Red Cross calculated that 6 lakh people might be directly affected by the disaster, out of them 1.5 lakh are likely to be displaced. “They urgently need temporary shelters,” Ratsimamangas warned the government.

Tropical storms have wreaked havoc on the country over the previous few weeks. In January alone, Cyclone Ana forced more than 1 lakh 30 thousand people to leave their homeland and seek temporary refuge. The cyclonic calamities also contributed to the country’s chronic hunger.
