Kathmandu, April 1. Sri Lanka is turning off street lights to save electricity, as the country faces the worst economic crisis in decades.

Power Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi said, “We have already instructed officials to shut off street lights around the country to help conserve power.”

Additionally, Sri Lankans have been facing shortages of essentials and rocketing prices of goods.

Earlier, the government had announced loadshedding of 13 hours a day.

The water reservoirs at hydropower projects has hit an all time low and stocks have also fallen.

Badly-timed tax cuts, coronavirus pandemic and weak government finances are said to be the causes of the crisis. Sri Lanka’s foreign reserves hit an all time low, forcing it to take help from International Monetary Fund, India and China.
