Kathmandu, April 15. Bisket Jatra (also known as ‘Biska Jatra’) is one of the main festivals of the Newars of Bhaktapur. It is a nine-day festival with pulling chariots of two deities, Bhairav and Bhadrakali.

The festival starts during Chaitra- the last month of the Nepali Bikram Sambat calendar and ends during Baishakh- to mark the beginning of the new year of the Nepali Bikram Sambat calendar and spring season as well.

The jatra is celebrated as the “festival after the death of the serpent”. Different stories and folklores are behind the saying.

Moreover, each day has its own significance and celebrated with different rituals. ‘Sindoor Jatra’ also celebrated as a part of this festival. Further, people participating in the jatra get to witness many rituals from tug of war, to erecting and falling of the ‘lingo'(pole) to tongue piercing and so on.
