114th birth anniversary of Maha Kabi Laxmi Prasad Devkota
Kathmandu, October 24. Every year Devkota Jayanti is observed by organizing various programs in Nepal and abroad on the day of Laxmi Puja. Today is the 114th birth anniversary of Laxmi Prasad Devkota, the Mahakavi (greatest poet) of Nepali literature.
Devkota was born on Kartik 27, 1966 BS, on the auspicious day of Laxmi Puja of the Tihar festival. With hundreds of immensely popular essays and poems to his credit, Devkota is considered one of the most influential and acclaimed poets and essayists of Nepali literature.
Devkota’s masterpieces include epics like “Shakuntala”, “Sulochana”, and “Maharana Pratap” to name a few. His “Munamadan”, which depicts the agony of separation between two beloveds is the most popular work in Nepali literature till date. Devkota was a prolific writer who wrote in Nepali and English with equal ease.
He also contributed to making Nepali literature known to the world. Poet Devkota played a vital role in making the Nepali language mandatory in the school curriculum when he served as the Education Minister for a brief period. He also contributed a lot to establish the Royal Nepal Academy.
He died of blood cancer on Bhadra 29, 2016 BS.
