Health Ministry issues directive against Gender Ultrasound during pregnancy
Kathmandu, June 16. The Ministry of Health and Population announced on Friday its directive to health institutions, prohibiting the practice of identifying the gender of babies in pregnant women.
In a letter addressed to government, private, and community health institutions, the ministry’s under-secretary, Yekdev Khanal, emphasized the illegality of sex-selective ultrasounds, stating that individuals found guilty could face imprisonment ranging from three months to one year. “
The ministry’s directive comes in response to the recently released report of the National Housing and Population Census 2021, which revealed concerns about imbalances in the sex ratio of newborns in the country. The report highlights the increasing number of male newborns compared to females, primarily due to the unlawful practice of sex-selective fetus abortion.
