China, Solomon Islands strengthen ties

Kathmandu, July 10. Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday met with Prime Minister of Solomon Islands Manasseh Sogavare. The meeting, that took place in Beijing, focused on strengthening collaborative assistance under the South-South cooperation initiative.

In the meeting, Xi elaborated that China is willing to endorse joint contributions and win-win results along with respecting the independence and sovereignty of the Pacific island countries.

Furthermore, Solomon Island Prime Minister Sogavare also met China’s Premier Li Qiang. He has signed new agreements on police, economic and technical cooperation with Li. He went on to add that Solomon Islands needs to learn from China’s development experience.

The US has announced to reopen their embassy at the Solomon Islands and Biden has pledged US$ 810 million in aid to Pacific Island nations through the next decade. Moreover, US is also concerned over the security pact that China signed with Solomon Islands in April 2022.

Sogavare reached Beijing on Sunday for an official visit.
