Decrease in Tourists Affects Annapurna Trail Businesses in Lamjung
Lamjung, Jan 30: The Annapurna trail, a renowned destination in the global tourism market, is witnessing a decline in tourist numbers, particularly foreign visitors. The Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) Tourist Check and Information Center at Dharapani reported a significant drop, with only two to four foreign tourists arriving daily.
Bhupendra Gurung, in-charge of the center, attributed the decrease to the onset of colder weather, predicting that the numbers would continue to decline until the start of summer. More than 35,000 tourism professionals operate along this trail, relying heavily on the tourism sector for income. With the extreme cold dissuading tourist arrivals, businessmen operating hotels along the trail are facing financial challenges.
Paccha Bahadur Gurung from Masryangdi Rural Municipality-4 Jagat of Lamjung expressed concern about the impact on daily income, stating that during peak tourist times, daily earnings could reach up to Rs. He emphasized that the sudden decline in tourist arrivals due to the cold weather is causing worries about managing daily livelihoods.
Khus Bahadur Tamang, another tourism businessman, echoed these concerns, noting that despite previously earning 30-35 thousand rupees daily, the recent decrease in tourist numbers is affecting his ability to support his family.
The Annapurna trail is a popular route for tourists traveling from Manang to Mustang or Pokhara, offering breathtaking views of the Himalayas, mountain scenery, and the rich cultural heritage of the Manang people. Stretching across five districts—Lamjung, Manang, Kaski, Mustang, and Myagdi—the trail’s entrance in Lamjung’s Benisahar is the gateway to an experience recognized as one of the top ten trekking routes globally. As the trail experiences reduced foot traffic, not only tourism professionals but also hundreds of hotel employees, porters, and tourist guides are grappling with the economic impact.
