Kathmandu, Jan 29: At least 15 people were killed and more than 50 others injured in a stampede at the Mahakumbh Mela in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh today. The tragic incident occurred when a sudden rush along a barricaded pathway led to a chaotic push, causing several people to fall and get trampled.

According to Indian media outlet Dainik Bhaskar, 14 bodies have already been taken to Swaruparani Hospital for postmortem. Authorities fear the death toll could rise as many of the injured remain in critical condition.

In anticipation of potential accidents, police had deployed hundreds of cameras and drones to monitor crowd movement. However, despite these measures, the sheer size of the gathering—expected to reach over 400 million visitors in a month and a half—poses significant challenges.

The Mahakumbh Mela has seen fatal stampedes in the past. In 1954, around 400 people lost their lives, while in 2013, a similar tragedy resulted in 36 deaths. Authorities are now investigating the cause of the latest incident and working to enhance crowd control measures.
