Kathmandu, Feb 12: The issue of Left unity has resurfaced in Nepal’s political landscape, sparking intense discussion among the ruling coalition. CPN-UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel recently had conversations with CPN-Maoist Deputy General Secretary Barshaman Pun on communist cooperation, raising concerns across political circles.

Pokharel’s comments on social media suggested his intent to build a “strong communist movement” by uniting party cadres. However, Pun disclosed at a party function that Pokharel had sought support for passing an ordinance in the House, prompting debate within the ruling coalition.

The Nepali Congress (NC), in coalition with UML, expressed serious concern over Pokharel’s remarks. Sources reported that NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba instructed party members to investigate the context of Pokharel’s statement, particularly its implications for the coalition’s stability.

While Pokharel advocated for Left unity, the UCPN (Maoist) leadership, led by Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, dismissed the idea of unity under Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s leadership. Prachanda claimed Oli seeks to repeal the constitution and derail the ongoing political process.

Former Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal echoed a similar stance, emphasizing that Left unity should be based on policies and programs rather than leadership battles. He ruled out any possibility of forming another government by toppling the current administration.

The debate underscores deep divisions within Nepal’s Left political factions, with unity efforts facing significant challenges amid ongoing political maneuvering.
