Ram Vilas Paswan dies at 74: champion of poor loses health battle
Kathmandu. Food and Consumer Affairs Minister of India Ram Vilas Paswan died at a private hospital in Delhi on Thursday. He had undergone a heart surgery recently.
The 74-year-old Lok Janashakti Party (LJP) leader was suffering from several ailments. He was admitted with heart and kidney failure and was supported by dialysis.
Paswan had a long stint in Indian politics and was a very famous figure representing the dalits. The Indian government has decided to confer state funeral to Paswan, respecting his tall stature as a dalit politician. The Indian national flag will also be flown half mast in Delhi and all state capitals.
It is assumed that Paswan’s death will have an emotive impact, helping the LJP in the approaching Bihar elections.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted that he was saddened to know about the demise of Paswan and that the country had lost a champion of the poor.
