Kathmandu. A study published in the Seismological Research Letters’ journal in August revealed that the Himalayan range is preparing itself for a series of earthquakes including a major earthquake of a magnitude above 8.
The researcher Steven G Wesnousky who is the Director and Professor at the Center for Neotectonic Studies, University of Nevada claimed that the entire Himalayan belt ranging from Arunachal Pradesh(India) to Pakistan has always been the epicenter of the biggest earthquakes in the past. He also said that these big earthquakes would keep occurring in the Himalayan range in an order of 100 years.
According to Seismologist Supriyo Mitra from the department of Earth sciences at IISE Kolkata, who was involved in the research of Wesnousky said that this study is an in-depth review of the previous researches and makes an attempt to predict future risks by estimating the duration and magnitude of prehistoric earthquakes in the Himalayan range. The study relies on the basic geographic principles along with stratigraphic, structural, radiocarbon and soil analysis.
According to the scientists, densely populated major cities in the Himalayan frontal thrust including Kathmandu in Nepal, Chandigarh and Dehradun in India may be the most affected by the next earthquakes.
