Major 7.0 magnitude earthquake rattles Greece, Turkey

Kathmandu. An earthquake of magnitude 7.0 struck the Aegean Sea Friday, damaging buildings in the Turkish city of Izmir and causing flooding in the coastal city of Samos in Greece.
The epicenter of the quake, which hit at around 2.50 pm local time, was some 17 km off the coast of the Izmir city of Turkey, at a depth of 16 km, in the Aegean Sea.
Video footage on social media showed buildings in the Turkish city of Izmir had been seriously damaged and streets were flooded due to a small tsunami following the earthquake.
Turkey’s Health Minister Fahrettin Koca tweeted that four people had died in the earthquake and 120 people had been injured.
People rushed into the streets on Samos and other islands of Greece following the tremor. There was flooding on the Greek island of Samos and a tsunami warning was issued urging residents to stay away from coastal areas
Both countries reported aftershocks.
Greece and Turkey are both situated in an earthquake prone zone. In 1999, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake in Turkey, killed more than 17,000 people.
