Mexico City. The death toll caused by Hurricane Eta in Guatemala has risen to 50. Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei has stated that search and rescue operations have been intensified in the areas devastated by the hurricane. “Unfortunately, four people have died today, making the death toll rise to 50,” he expressed in a news conference late Thursday.

President Giammattei mentioned that more than 1,500 people still were in need to be rescued from the hurricane affected regions, but added that rescue efforts were being hampered by rising water levels. Climate projections have forecasted heavy rains in Guatemala for the next 48 hours.

Nine government agencies have already declared a state of emergency. Hurricane Eta is currently moving towards Honduras, making its way towards the Caribbean.
