English frontline health workers to get COVID-19 vaccine in 10 days
Kathmandu. England has instructed its hospitals to get prepared within 10 days, for receiving the COVID-19 vaccines made by Pfizer and BioNTech. The frontline medical workers are likely to be the first to receive the vaccine between December 7 and December 9.
After the staff of the National Health Service (NHS) receive the vaccines, the elderly residents aged over 80 and the home care patients who are at the highest risk will be receiving the doses.
The original plan had been to vaccinate the home care and elderly residents at first, but due to the limitations of the handling and the use of the Pfizer vaccine, they will not be able to make it to the community this time.
“The vaccine cannot be moved or taken out of -70 degree temperature for more than four times. By the time the vaccine reaches the NHS units, the vaccine will already be moved three times, due to which it must be used within 5 days of delivery. Because of its short shelf life, it will be the NHS staff getting it first,” a hospital executive said.
Last week, the NHS had urged its staff to get shots of the winter flu vaccine by the end of November, so they could have the COVID-19 vaccine after a gap.
