Kathmandu. US President-Elect Joe Biden has decided on his choice for the defense secretary. He has picked retired four-star army General Lloyd Austin for the post, who will be the first African-American to hold the post.
Biden is likely to officially announce the decision on Tuesday. The United States requires a seven-year cool off before becoming a defense secretary. Austin will require a waiver from the US Congress if he gets chosen for the post. This will be a second time a person will receive a waiver since Trump got a waiver for Jim Mattis, who became the secretary in 2017.
Austin was the head of the US Central Command overseeing combat in Afghanistan, Iraq, Yemen and Syria. He also monitored the US response to the crisis of Islamic State (IS) and withdrawal of US troops from Iraq.
The revelation of the decision has been widely criticized by analysts and officials at Pentagon.
