Preparation starts for distribution of water from Melamchi
Kathmandu, January 4. Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited (KUKL), the government body responsible for the supply of drinking water of Kathmandu, has prepared a plan for effective distribution of the water from Melamchi. The company has started the process of preparing and implementing a plan as to reduce water leakage and distribute water in all places inside the Kathmandu Valley.
Chief Executive Officer of the company Milan Shakya, said that they have already identified the challenges that could come due to natural disasters such as floods and have started preparations for the solutions. According to him, the ministry and the board have also agreed on the schedule for distribution of drinking water.
It is said that leakage may frequently occur as the water distribution pipes in the valley are decades old. He informed that the materials required for leakage repair have been procured. The list of construction companies also has been prepared as it requires a lot of human resource at once. He said, “Once that list is available, it will be possible to mobilize large number of human resource at once.”
Chief Executive Officer Shakya said that the water has to be first send for the checking and maintenance of pipes. When Melamchi Drinking Water Project said it would send water into the tunnel last July, preparations for it had been started by the corporation.
The company has maintained that they have been working for the leakages. They said the water could not be conducted via some old pipes and will replace them with new ones so that every place gets access to water from Melamchi.
A committee has been formed under the chairmanship of CEO Shakya with representatives from the Ministry of Water Supply, Directorate and Board to manage for the water distribution. The ministry and the project are preparing in full swing to remove the defects in the tunnel and test it as soon as possible. RSS
