Hospital fire kills 10 infants in India

Kathmandu. A massive fire broke out at a Hospital in Maharashtra in the wee hours of Saturday which took the lives of 10 newborn babies.

The tragic incident took place at the Sick Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) of Bhandara District General Hospital. At the time of the incident, 17 infants aged between one to three months were admitted and receiving care.

According to media reports, At around 1:30 am, an on-duty nurse first noticed a large amount of smoke coming out from the neonatal section. Five Fire brigades were immediately called and a rescue operation was carried out.  7 babies in the inborn ward were saved whereas, 10 others admitted in the outborn ward died due to suffocation.

The rescued babies were moved to another ward. Patients from the ICU ward, dialysis wing and labour ward were also transferred to a safer place.

The cause of the fire is unknown. Maharashtra’s chief minister has ordered an investigation into the matter.
