A military plane, ‘Antonov-26’ crashed in the city of Kharkiv on Friday night at 8:50 p.m. local time. There were a total of 27 people on board, which included 20 air cadets and 7 crew members. The military plane was carrying the cadets from the Kharkiv Air Force University for a training flight.
25 have been confirmed to be dead, two are severely injured. President Volodymyr Zelensky has described it as a ‘terrible incident’. Deputy interior minister Anton Gerashenko also said that the incident was ‘shocking’ and the investigation for the cause of the crash is being carried out.
The plane burst into flames as it crashed and it took an hour for the flames to get extinguished. The governor of Kharkiv Oleksiy Kucher claimed that the preliminary investigation suggested that the pilot had reported a failure in the engine before the crash, however, it should not have been a very serious issue. An eyewitness told the Reuters that he had seen a man in flames running from the wreckage of the plane.
Further investigation regarding the cause of the crash is underway.
