Afghanistan’s star cricketer dies in a road accident

Kathmandu. 29-year-old opening batsman from Afganistan, Najib Tarakai died on Tuesday from injuries he sustained in a road accident.

Last Friday, Najib was crossing the road from a grocery store in East Nangarhar in Jalalabad when he was hit by a car and was rushed to the nearby hospital in a critical condition. He was in a coma due to a serious head injury and went through a surgery. The Afghanistan Cricket Board expressed their grief on his departure stating that, “ACB and Afghanistan Cricket Loving Nation mourns the heartbreaking and grievous loss of its aggressive opening batsman & a very fine human being Najeeb Tarakai (29) who lost his life to a tragic traffic accident leaving us all shocked.”

Najeeb made his international debut in 2014 against Bangladesh in the Asia Cup. He has represented Afghanistan in 12 Twenty20 International and 1 One Day International. His highest international score was 90 against Ireland on March 2017 in Greater Noida. His latest international appearance was on September 2019 in Bangladesh Tri-Series 2019.
