Kabul. A suicide-bomb attack in the Afghan capital on Saturday killed at least 18 people and wounded 57, including students. According to the Interior Ministry, the death toll may rise.

The attack was made at the ‘Kawsar-e Danish’ education center  in the western Kabul neighborhood which has a large Shiite  Hazara community, a minority group in the country. The center offers training and courses for higher education students.

“A suicide bomber wanted to enter the education center,” Tareq Arain, spokesman for the interior ministry, said in a statement.

“But he was identified by the center’s guards after which he detonated his explosives in an alley.”

The Islamic State, which had been targeting the Shiite community in the past, has taken the responsibility for the attack, Reuters reported.

Afghanistan has seen a spike in violence recently, although the government and the Taliban have initiated for peace talks to end the decades long conflict.
