Kathmandu. The 2020 US election has witnessed a rare case with Republican David Andahl winning his election to the North Dakota state legislature on Tuesday.  Andahl, 55, died from COVID-19 in October.

Andahl had run the challenge against incumbent state Rep. Jeff Delzer, a powerful Republican, in a June primary and defeated him. He was elected to the state House of Representatives for North Dakota’s 8th District, as declared by the election officials .

Andahl’s posthumous election victory has prompted a question as to what would happen in such cases.  CNN reports that the situation had been discussed after Andahl’s death in October. North Dakota’s attorney general issued an opinion stating that the situation would be treated just as an official’s decision to step down or retire, meaning that the district’s Republican Party would appoint a representative to fill his vacant seat.
