Tokyo. Japan has been hit by an earthquake on Saturday. The 6.2 magnitude earthquake had an epicenter in Chichijima, a city that lies 600 miles south-east from the capital city, Tokyo.

According to the Department of Geology in Japan, the earthquake struck at a depth of about ten kilometers. Department officials said there was no danger of a tsunami after the earthquake. They also noted that no human or material damage had been reported so far.

Japan is one of the most earthquake prone countries in the world. Dozens of earthquakes occur every year and some powerful earthquakes have caused human and material damage. A devastating 9-magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami in 2011 killed at least 15,000 people and damaged much of Japan’s infrastructure.
