Kathmandu, May 11. The person was shooting indiscriminately and set his own house on fire. His house was besides mine. No matter how much I try to forget, the incident always remains in front of my eyes.

Most people in the US are always busy and have hardly time to socialize with neighbors. Rarely hi and hellos are exchanged, and with that neighbor as well, I just smiled when I used to see him.

Durga Neupane has been living in Woodland, Maryland, USA for a year and a half. Living in the community was good, but the neighbors with whom Durga’s house was attached, seemed to have some unnatural behavior.

It was unimaginable that the neighbor would act to such an extent – not only for Durga’s family but for the entire community.

On May 8, Saturday morning, the photos on the wall began to shake. Durga Neupane had gone to work while his wife and family were at home. Sagar Ghimire of Sankhuwasabha and Shyam Adhikari of Sarlahi, who had just rented the house, also found the incident unexpected.

They wondered if there was an earthquake. They left the house and ran out. Wrapping around both the children in her arms, Durga’s wife rushed out to find the neighbor’s house being burnt down. The bullets were being shot out indiscriminately.

The scene was tensed when the police and firefighters reached the scene. Sagar and Shyam rushed inside the house to get some important documents, but were shot when they tried to put those documents inside the car. They both were rushed to the hospital, but Sagar lost his life. Police was able to kill the neighbor in a shootout.

Durga also rushed to reach his home after hearing about the incident. His house was burnt down when he reached. A Spanish family is also devastated by the incident.

Kiran Dhakal, General Secretary of the Baltimore Association of Nepalese in America (BANA), rushed to the rescue of the victims.

According to him, BANA Chairman Subodhbilas Pant and other Nepalis also reached the spot and consoled the bereaved family.

“I don’t even want to remember the horrific scene at the scene,” said General Secretary Dhakal. “It took a long time to find the relatives of Sagar, a Nepali student who lost his life in such an unexpected incident. We also contacted Prabhu Thapa, a social worker in California. Arrangements have been made to keep Neupane’s family at the home of a supportive Nepali.”
