Man caught for smuggling NINE kilograms gold in Kathmandu Airport; TIA becomes central hub for illegal gold imports

Kathmandu, February 2. In the wee hours of Thursday, the security screening team at the Tribhuvan International Airport nabbed a gold smuggler with 9 kilograms of gold.

According to the Customs Office,  35-year-old Canadian national Mohammad Kamal Mahagob was arrested on charges of smuggling gold while arriving from the UAE.

Office Chief Arun Pokharel informed reporters that Mahagob landed at around 12:00 am on a Fly Dubai flight. Minutes later, he was caught while on a security screening check.

Illegal gold imports from Tribhuvan airport have been continuing indefinitely and smugglers are being detained at the airport almost every week. Many of them were detained upon arrival from the UAE.
