Kathmandu, June 21. The Hetauda cement industry, facing a shortage of coal supplies, has recently reopened its operations after being forced to close for two months.

According to Basanta Raj Pandey, the general manager, the industry has managed to import coal supplies from India, Bhutan, and Indonesia. He stated, “So far, we have received 1,800 metric tonnes of coal in the first and second installments. The remaining 1,200 metric tonnes will be imported within one month.”

Earlier in February, the management of the Hetauda cement industry initiated a bidding process for the supply of 8,000 metric tonnes of coal. However, the industry faced a major setback as it received only 1,600 metric tonnes of coal after a two-week shutdown, which lasted a mere 15 days, according to Nabin Kumar Karna, the deputy general manager.

Media reports suggest that the government-owned cement industry has incurred a loss of over Rs 111 million by the end of the current fiscal year, 2022/23. The overall loss amounts to Rs 900 million, as stated by the management.
