Kathmandu, Feb 1: Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar of the state of Johor in Malaysia has been sworn in as the new king of the country in a ceremony held on Wednesday. Sultan Iskandar, a member of the royal family of Johor, has been elected as the king for the next five years.
The monarchy in Malaysia operates on a rotational basis among the rulers of the Malay kingdoms, each serving a five-year term as king. Sultan Iskandar follows this tradition, taking the throne for the next five years.
The coronation ceremony was marked by the Sultan’s arrival in Kuala Lumpur, where he typically travels annually by motorcycle to engage with the people. Sultan Iskandar, aged 65, hails from the affluent royal family of Johor, with reported assets worth Rs 47.33 lakh crore. His extensive wealth includes ownership of 300 luxury cars, a private jet, and significant stakes in various businesses ranging from real estate to telecommunications and palm oil.
Sultan Iskandar’s official residence is Istana Bukit Sirin, reflecting his opulent lifestyle. His wife, Zareeth Sophia, comes from a royal background and holds a degree from Oxford. She is a professional writer, having authored numerous children’s books. The couple has five sons and one daughter.
Sultan Iskandar’s eldest son, Tunku Ismail, holds the title of Crown Prince and serves as a captain in the Indian Army. Notably, Tunku Ismail became the first foreigner to command a unit of the Indian Army in 2007.
In preparation for his coronation, Sultan Iskandar adhered to a special diet aimed at presenting a fitter appearance. The New Straits Times reported that the Sultan focused on consuming fruits and vegetables while maintaining a balanced water intake.
As Malaysia’s new king, Sultan Iskandar expressed plans to resume the high-speed rail project with Singapore and boost the Forest City project. He emphasized his commitment to supporting the government while reserving the right to oppose if deemed necessary.
Malaysia’s monarchy plays a crucial role in the country’s political landscape, serving as the official head of Islam and commander-in-chief of the armed forces. The rotation of kings every five years contributes to the stability of the monarchy within Malaysia’s political structure.
