Baglung, Mar 23: Baglung was historically isolated from road networks until 2048, along with neighboring districts like Myagdi and Mustang, leading to transportation challenges for the region. Balewa Airport in Baglung Municipality-14 served as a vital link through regular air services, initially built through local community efforts in 2022.

Despite its significance, the airport faced operational setbacks after Baglung was connected to roadways in 2048. Flights ceased, and the airport remained closed for 26 years until Baglung Municipality’s initiative in 2074 to reopen it. However, due to unpaved runways, flight operations stopped again after nine months.

In March 2078, the Civil Aviation Authority paved the airport’s runway at a substantial cost, yet flights have not resumed due to unresolved issues. Local stakeholders like Surendra Thapa expressed disappointment over the neglect of the airport’s operation, considering the community’s efforts in its establishment.

Chakra Bahadur Khatri, chairman of Baglung Municipality-14, emphasized the importance of reviving the airport for national pride and regional development. He highlighted the potential benefits for tourism, religious sites, and local livelihoods if the airport becomes operational again.

Efforts are ongoing to address the challenges, including the need for a black-topped road from Baglung market to Balewa airport, about 12 kilometers away. Raju Khadka, deputy head of Baglung Municipality, underlined the positive impacts the airport’s operation would have on transportation, tourism, and economic growth in the Dhaulagiri region encompassing Baglung, Parbat, and Myagdi districts.
