Conspiracy to Overthrow Bangladesh Army Chief Unveiled After Sheikh Hasina’s Death
Kathmandu, Jan 28: A conspiracy to remove Bangladesh’s current army chief, General Waqar-uz-Zaman, has come to light following the death of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Reports suggest that Lieutenant General Mohammad Faizur Rahman is at the center of this plot, allegedly preparing to take over the leadership of the army with the backing of radical elements.
Rahman, known for his pro-Pakistan stance, reportedly met with officials from Pakistan’s intelligence agency, ISI, during their visit to Dhaka last week. It is believed that this meeting was an effort to gain their support, as well as potential cooperation from Bangladesh’s own intelligence agency, DGFI.
General Waqar-uz-Zaman has long been considered a close ally of Sheikh Hasina and a supporter of India. His role in helping Hasina escape Bangladesh after the August 5 coup cemented his position as a loyalist. However, Faizur Rahman’s increasing influence and alignment with radical groups have raised concerns about the country’s political and military stability.
Waqar-uz-Zaman’s career spans nearly four decades in the Bangladesh Army. A graduate of the National University of Bangladesh and King’s College, London, he has held key positions, including Chief of General Staff and commander of an infantry brigade. He assumed the role of Chief of Army Staff in June 2024. His personal connection to Hasina is also noteworthy, as his wife, Begum Sarhanaj, is the daughter of Sheikh Hasina’s uncle, Mustafizur Rahman, who once led the army during Hasina’s tenure as prime minister.
The unrest in Bangladesh, which began with protests against the abolition of the 30% employment quota for freedom fighters’ families, has continued to ripple through the country’s political system. The protests, which escalated in June, eventually forced Sheikh Hasina to resign and flee to India, leaving the military in charge.
This latest development signals further instability in Bangladesh’s governance and raises questions about the future of its leadership. The involvement of external forces and radical factions in the conspiracy underscores the complexity of the situation.
